Help desk, rest house for pilgrims coming up in capital city

Thiruvananthapuram: A facilitation centre will come up at Killipalam to promote key pilgrim centres in the city such as Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple and Attukal Bhagavathy Temple that are thronged by thousands of devotees daily. The facilitation centre will have an information kiosk that provides information regarding the significance of each temple, their special features, and facilities that are available for devotees.

The project is being carried out as part of the central government's Swadesh Darshan Scheme at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The facilitation centre will be set up on a 25-cent plot that was recovered from encroachers. It will also have a rest house and washroom for devotees.

The information kiosk will provide details about pilgrim centres in the district and nearby areas including Kanyakumari. It will cost Rs 1.35 crore. Once the central government approves the project, work will begin.

Helpful to Sabarimala devotees too

The centre will help address the issue of lack of a facility that could provide information regarding pilgrim centres within the city. It will also be a boon for Sabarimala devotees during the mandalam season. At present, Sabarimala pilgrims are using Attukal temple as their halting point. The amount spent on preparing the halting point can be saved once the facilitation centre and rest house are ready.

As part of the Swadesh Darsham Scheme, renovation works on the road from the west nada (step) of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple through Vazhappally to Vettimurichakotta are being carried out. About Rs 10 crore has been set aside for laying underground cables and pipelines of the water authority, BSNL and other service providers.

The temple authorities have submitted an application to the PWD department for the renovation work.
