After Ayyappa, LDF wants no Ram effect in Kerala on Dec 6

After Ayyappan, LDF wants to insulate the state from the Rama effect
(L) Sabarimala temple, (R) VHP activists take out a rally in Ayodhya.

Now that the communal charge of Sabarimala issue is on the wane, the LDF is in no mood to further concede an inch to the Sangh Parivar in the state. The LDF fears the RSS and BJP, after their success in stoking communal passions in the state in the name of Ayyappa, would whip up pro-Hindu sentiments on December 6, the 26th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition. Extreme right-wing outfits like Vishwa Hindu Parishad have already begun to crank up the decibel level on 'Rama Rama' chants.

On December 6, when the Sangh Parivar will raise its pitch for a Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the LDF will organise 'communal harmony gatherings' in all the 140 Assembly constituencies. LDF convenor A Vijayaraghavan said this was to counter the Sangh Parivar's call to create a communal divide in the country in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.

“At the recently concluded Dharma Sabha in Ayodhya, Parivar organistions had declared that they would fix the date for the construction of a Ram Temple at the disputed site regardless of what the Supreme Court has to say in the issue,” the LDF convenor said. “These right-wing elements have said they have the support of senior ministers in the Narendra Modi government, and further claimed that the centre would issue an ordinance to construct a Ram Temple in Ayodhya. They have also asked the Muslim community to desist from staking claim to the disputed land,” Vijayaraghavan added.

He said there were reports of Muslim families leaving Ayodhya en masse after extreme religious emotions were on display during the Dharma Sabha. The LDF convenor said that during his election speeches in Madhya Pradesh, the prime minister was making statements that were strengthening the hands of extreme right-wing elements. “This has caused deep concerns in a secular society,” the LDF convenor said.

Sabarimala usually witnesses an inflow of 50,000-1,00,000 pilgrims each day during the two-month long pilgrim season from November to mid-January.

He said the attitude of certain Muslim outfits was also not helpful. “Some of their statements are not conducive to securing peace,” he said.
