Malampuzha, Palakkad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit in Kerala has called a hartal here after one of their party workers was slain on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Sanjith, a resident of Eduppukulam near Elappully in Kerala's Palakkad district.
The 27-year-old was the Block Secretary (Mandalam Karyavahak) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
A car rammed into Sanjith's bike near Kinassery while he and his wife were travelling on Monday morning.
When the two fell, a group of men emerged out of the car and stabbed Sanjith with a machete.
Police suspect that members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) are behind this attack.
SDPI is the political outfit of the Islamic group Popular Front of India.
It is believed that this attack is a backlash to a previous political conflict which resulted in a murder.
Palakkad Police Chief Viswanath R has launched a detailed probe into the incidents.
The BJP has called for a hartal in the Malampuzha constituency from 2 pm to 6 pm on Monday.
BJP State President K Surendran lashed out at the CPM-led government for allegedly protecting the gang.
Sanjith is the second RSS worker to be killed by SDPI's men in 10 days, Surendran pointed out.
He said the police is reluctant to even mention the involvement of SDPI in the murders.
The CPM and SDPI share power in the local bodies here, he explained.
Citing the murders, he said the law and order situation in the state is heading towards an extremely dangerous situation.
He warned that if the government and police are unable to mitigate this growing problem, then BJP will take matters into its own hands.
"We will mobilize the people and meet fire with fire," Surendran said.
