Kochi: Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has won the Manorama News-Federal Bank Newsmaker 2016 award. The award, which is given annually to a person from Kerala who has hogged the headlines most frequently, and brought about in a positive change in the society, was announced by writer M. Mukundan on Sunday.
"Mohanlal is an actor who can influence the masses," Mukundan said while announcing the winner.
Meanwhile, Mohanlal said he was proud to receive the award. "I see this as a reward for my 38-year long career as an actor," he added.
State finance minister Dr. Thomas Isaac, BJP MLA O. Rajagopal and Indian hockey team captain P.R. Sreejesh were the other contenders in the final round.
The Newsmaker of the Year is chosen by the viewers through SMS and online voting. The aim is to honor a personality, who by the merit of his or her work, made it to the headlines frequently and influenced public opinion.
