The headload workers of the market, some of them witnesses in the case, celebrated the death penalty for Bihar native Ashfaq Alam by distributing sweets to those who had gathered in the market.
The chief minister said that the child fell victim to the most heinous crime and therefore, the entire criminal justice system worked efficiently to catch the culprit.
The ADGP also commended the local residents, media and authorities for helping in the case since the beginning.
The prosecution had demanded that the case be considered among the rarest of the rare and sentence the accused, Ashfaq Alam (28), to capital punishment.
The victim, who is around 25 years of age, said that an objectionable video of her was made earlier and she was blackmailed over it.
The 63-year-old accused was sentenced to 109 years on various charges but will serve only 20 years as the sentences run concurrently.
The prosecution demanded that the case be considered among the rarest of the rare and sentence the accused to capital punishment.
Ernakulam POCSO court had on Saturday found Ashfaq Alam guilty of the crime.
The autorickshaw driver is a habitual offender and over 9 cases including POCSO are registered against him, said police.
