Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed by LTTE in a suicide blast at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu while he was on a poll campaign during the 1991 general election.
The top court had on May 18 ordered the release of Perarivalan, who had served over 30 years in jail.
The action came following investigations carried out by an inter-ministerial committee formed by the MHA in 2020.
The actress, who is now based in Mumbai, said the incident happened in Allahabad during her childhood.
A convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case has moved the Supreme Court seeking premature release.
While passing the order, the bench said that the high court does not enjoy special powers that the Supreme Court has under Article 142 of the constitution.
With the release of Perarivalan, calls for the release of the other convicts in the case are also being raised in the state with the octogenarian mother of Nalini, another convict, demanding her release.
Invoking its extraordinary power under Article 142 of the Constitution, the Supreme Court Wednesday ordered the release of A G Perarivalan, who has served over 30 years in jail in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
A bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao said the Tamil Nadu state cabinet's advice recommending the premature release of all seven convicts in the case was binding on the governor.
