After a meeting with Pawar and Baramati Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule on Tuesday, NCP general secretary Narendra Verma said the NCP chief had decided to accept the leadership of Chief Minister Rio "in the larger interest of the state of Nagaland".
The NDA has fielded West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar for the post.
He made the statement while addressing NCP legislators and other leaders of the party.
The feeling within the Congress is that the party was being treated as a poor cousin, even though it had heavyweights like former chief minister Ashok Chavan, and former PCC president Balasaheb Thorat as ministers.
Pawar asserted that the BJP has played a role in the crisis that has befallen the Uddhav Thackeray-led government.
The NCP leaders held discusions with the chief minister at 'Varsha', his official residence in south Mumbai. However, what transpired at the meeting could not be known.
With uncertainty looming over the Maharashtra MVA government's stability, the stand of 29 legislators from smaller parties and Independents is likely to be crucial.
Pawar is apparently busy trying to bring the opposition together ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
