Haneef's restaurant at Mattancherry in Kochi has a special item that attracts patrons from far and wide. All of them would have tasted chicken, beef, and mutton biriyanis, but not 'meat rice' (irachi choru).
Along with meat rice, several other dishes at the restaurant have earned fans with their unique names as well as tastes. Moreover, Haneef 'ikka' offers the dishes without burning a hole in the pockets of customers.
Haneef runs hotel Nooriya at Mattancherry which sees local people as well as foreigners rushing to taste meat rice and biriyanis. The meat rice comprises a mixture of ghee rice and beef. It is served from 11.30 am till the pot is empty. Though the price is low, Haneef does not compromise on quality or taste.
The restaurant is a small place but its fame has spread everywhere. Other dishes which are in big demand are Malabar chicken biriyani and beef biriyani.
The preparation and serving are done by Haneef and family. Haneef's son Shibu helps him in managing the restaurant. The meat rice and biriyani are prepared under Haneef's special supervision.
The biggest attraction of the restaurant is the price list. While meat rice is charged Rs 60, chicken biriyani is served for Rs 100 and beef biriyani comes at a mere Rs 90.
