Thiruvananthapuram: The official headcount of students at the public schools in Kerala is scheduled today (June 7). Annually, the count is held on the sixth working day of the academic year.

The schools should upload the number of students and other details based on students’ category, medium of instruction and language in the Sampoorna portal before 5 pm today.

Changes wouldn’t be allowed after the deadline.

Why the count is held
The number of posts of teachers in government and aided schools is determined based on the number of students who attend school in an academic year.

The number of students and periods are the major determinants to decide whether additional posts should be allowed, the existing posts should be scrapped or whether the posts should be rearranged.

Even though the headcount was conducted last year, the post determination was completed only by the end of the academic year. Based on this, the Department of General Education had recommended the creation of new posts. However, there is uncertainty regarding this as the Finance Department has expressed objections to these recommendations.

With the new count last year’s post determination is likely to become invalid.
