Malappuram to soon become cyber safe The police will visit the educational institutions to conduct classes about the various ways to be safe on the cyber space.

Malappuram: The district police department will launch a month-long campaign to curb cybercrime as the northern region of Kerala is clocking numerous such cases. Its #besafeonline campaign aims to make the district free of cybercrime. A minimum of at least 175 cybercrime cases are being registered in Malappuram district every month since the start of this year.

The #besafeonline initiative will be launched in the first week of July. The campaign will attempt to drive home the importance of safety and security in the cyber space. Subsequently, Malappuram will be declared as a cyber-safe district on Independence Day.

As part of the drive extensive awareness classes in schools and colleges and special training for the police personnel would be held.

The district-wide initiative on cyber safety will focus on school and college students as well as women. The police will visit the educational institutions to conduct classes about the various ways to be safe on the cyber space.

District police chief Pratheesh Kumar and officers at the cyber cell will lead the awareness classes. Besides starting a #besafeonline hashtag campaign on the social media, the news about it will be circulated on various print and visual media as well.

The district collector, elected representatives and ministers will also be part of the campaign. The various youth clubs in the district will collaborate with the police department.

It is reported that at least seven cases related to cybercrimes are reported across Malappuaram on a daily basis. Most of these are related to outraging the modesty of woman and offences against children.

Of late, cases related to spreading rumours through fake profiles on Facebook have gone significantly high. Five persons were arrested on such cases in the last one month.

“Being late in reporting a cybercrime may further delay the investigation and arrest of the culprit. Trying to confront attackers on cyber space would make the matter more complex. It is important to report any instance of cybercrime to the police. The number of cases related to offences against women has gone up drastically,” Kumar said.
