Thiruvananthapuram: A woman and six men, including her husband, have been arrested by the police for blackmailing two youths they met on social media. The gang had forged friendship with the youths on Facebook and enticed them to a house at Kannammoola.
When the youths reached the house on Saturday, the woman and her accomplices roughed them up and by threatening to kill them, took away Rs 40,000, their mobile phones and ATM cards. The Pettah police later arrested the gang, which included Jinu Jayan, a woman belonging to Kannammoola, her husband Vishnu and friends Abin Shah, Ashiq, Mansoor, Stalin and Vivek. They were produced in court and remanded. The police are checking whether the gang had carried out similar operations in the past.
Thriving racket
Meanwhile, in Kozhikode, the special branch launched an investigation into complaints regarding a thriving sex racket which was engaged in blackmailing. The racketeers would fix a deal with the clients over phone and supply girls. Pictures of the clients in compromising positions are recorded with hidden cameras and used for blackmailing. The clients would be threatened that their pictures would be uploaded on social media.
No complaints have been registered with the police as the victims feared a blot on their reputation. However, after ManoramaNews reported on the racket, a probe started.
It is learnt that several gangs are engaged in ‘blue blackmailing’ at various places in Kozhikode district. The gangs are led by women as well as notorious gangsters.
