Priya Varrier upset with humiliating trolls

Actor Priya Prakash Varrier became an instant internet sensation after a song from an upcoming film became a hit. Her famous 'wink' in it made her a celebrity overnight and she was bombarded with congratulatory messages from all over. However, the actress like many others was also not spared by online bullies, who trolled and mocked her severely.

Priya admitted that she was deeply pained by some recent controversies and trolls that were targeted against her. In an interview to the popular Malayalam women’s magazine 'Vanitha', Priya opened up that she was being unjustly criticised by people even before she is given a chance to prove her mettle as an actress.

She added that the recent trolls comparing her to actress Nazriya Nazim, who made a stunning comeback with the super hit movie ‘Koode’, has pained her all the more.

“I am sad that those who are attacking me now are the same people who once celebrated me. The recent trolls which surfaced online after the release of ‘Koode’ was particularly humiliating. The fact that Nazriya was making a comeback after four years too was something for these trollers to celebrate.

‘When you see Nazriya one would want to fling people like Priya Varrier into the well, for no winks are as beautiful as Nazriya’s eyes', read a few trolls on social media.

Responding on these, Priya said, “I haven’t had the opportunity to prove my talent as an actress. People who ought to judge me on the basis of my acting skills are now simply pointing their fingers at me. Is it right to troll me just to please another actress? People should at least wait till my movie releases and then judge whether I am a good or bad actress”.

There were also criticisms against the TV commercial of a popular chocolate brand which featured Priya. There were reports that the company had withdrawn the advertisement as they did not like Priya’s acting.

Talking about it, Priya reasoned, “That particular chocolate TV commercial was shot during the time of IPL. When the IPL season ended, the screen time of the advertisement too became less.”

Reports had surfaced online that the advertisement which was shot on a budget of Rs 1 crore has incurred great losses for the company and hence was withdrawn. “When I contacted the office of the chocolate company, they, however, said that the commercial had in fact earned them great profit. They said they were even ready to hold a press meeting to clarify the figures. But by that time, many had already believed the fake news,” Priya clarified.

The actress was also dragged into an unwarranted controversy after politician Rahul Gandhi famously winked at a Parliament session. One evening when the actress returned home from college, she was welcomed by a swarm of media persons who sought her opinion about Gandhi’s wink. Priya said when she told the media that she felt happy that the politician had done it, the journalists had demanded a little more ‘exaggerated’ reaction from her.

Priya, however, claimed that her words were twisted by the media. “The news came as if I had said that Rahul Gandhi was trying to ape me. Online trolls too followed soon. How else should I have reacted then? Controversies like these are created unnecessarily. There are people who don’t like it when someone enjoys a sudden good fortune,” stated Priya.
