Art works set to enchant rail users at Palakkad

Palakkad: Railway stations are often drab places if we ignore the sights of people in various types of attire and myriad sounds. The walls around the Palakkad Junction railway station, however, sport a different look as they are now adorned mainly with art work related to Kerala.

The walls which have been beautified were earlier entirely covered with moss. It was decided to create paintings on the walls as part of the railway beautification project. The artists behind the effort are P S Sunilan of Thripunithura and T P Haridasan and C B Bahuleyan of Shoranur.

In the first phase, the walls extending from Railway Colony to the railway station will be adorned with the art. Work at the main gate of the station will be taken up later. Images of trains as well as the traditional art forms, cultural themes and natural beauty of Kerala are among the themes.

Till now, the paintings depicting Kathakali, Thira, Theyyam, Kalpathy car festival and the fort of Tipu Sultan have been completed. Another 30 paintings on boat race, Parassinikkadavu Muthappan, forests, bamboo grove, environment, history of trains etc. will be ready soon.

Palakkad Junction station was earlier known as Olavakkode station.
