Like in every film, this house has a flashback too! The story is set in Calicut, to be exact, on a 2.5 cent plot in Malaparamba Housing Colony. The main characters are BSNL employee Mohanan, his wife and his kids. Due to the small size of the plot, the family had almost put a full stop to their dream of having a spacious house.
The new house had to be built, demolishing the congested old house that stood on the plot.
On a square shaped plot, a beautiful square shaped two-storey house stands proud. When Mohan restricted his wishes to a small, single story two-bedroom house, architectural consultant Sandeep Kollarkandi absolutely surprised him with a two-story house with all modern facilities.
Cut to present day!
The 1,200 sq ft house utilizes space by meeting all requirements of the family. On a square shaped plot, a beautiful square shaped two-storey house stands proud. The house has three attached bedrooms, living area, dining area, kitchen, work area, balcony and upper hall that a house on a small plot otherwise could never include. Brick cladding has been done on a small portion below the elevation and this is a striking feature in the construction. The grayish green theme of the exterior walls gives the house a simple, yet classy look. Long windows have been placed near the staircase. To ensure maximum natural lighting in the interiors, dormer windows have been added.
From the main entrance, you enter a spacious hall that has been divided into formal living and dining areas. From the main entrance, you enter a spacious hall that has been divided into formal living and dining areas. To use up the available space cleverly, a wash basin has been provided right under the stairs. The TV unit comes in a separate family living area. As the house is set in a housing colony, the frontage and boundary area were used up too.
Irul timber wood has been used for the doors and windows. It is always the furnishing expenses that go way beyond expectations. But this expense could be controlled here as the planning was meticulously done well in advance. Irul timber wood has been used for the doors and windows. White paint finish was done on these. Vitrified tiles were used for the flooring and bison panel was used to furnish the kitchen. Humidity or moisture do not affect this as it is a combination of cement mix and plywood. Hence, the panels last longer.

With good planning, they were able to source cost effective materials without compromising on the quality. The modular kitchen has been designed in a minimal style. The bedrooms that measure 10 by 11 also have a minimalist design.

A rain water harvesting system has been incorporated here too. As houses are set quite close in the colony, it prevents the rain water from splashing onto neighboring houses.
The bedrooms that measure 10 by 11 also have a minimalist design. The wall and the gate follow a gray theme and design that match the house. The total cost of the house came to just 20 lakh rupees! Building a house as big as this on such a small plot is indeed an amazing feat. Both the family and the designer seem pretty pleased at a job well done!
