A house in three cents! This might make you wonder how anybody could live in such a small space. But in a place like Kochi where even a cent would cost a fortune, a comfortable house in three cents for a three-member family wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. This 1,340 square feet house at Thoppumpady has a living room, dining area, kitchen, work area and five bedrooms.
Though the construction materials did not cost much, the owner was not ready to compromise on the quality.
The doors, which open to the outside, are made of teak while the doors indoor were bought ready-made and fixed. The window frames are made in karivelakam (babool tree) and the panes in maruthu (terminalia).
Light shaded vitrified tiles, which cost 100 rupees per square feet, are used on the floor. The floor of the sit out and the stair case are laid with granite, which cost 210 rupees per square feet.
Tiles, which cost 60 rupees per square feet, are used on bathroom walls, floors and car porch floor.
Branded electrical fittings and switches are used in the entire house.
There was no compromise on the quality of sanitary fittings as well.
The railing of the stair case is made with stainless steel square tube to cut down the costs.
There is a work area attached to the kitchen and a utility space made by joining the outer and the boundary walls.
The kitchen walls are all done up with tiles to avoid staining.
There are five bedrooms in this house: two downstairs and three upstairs. Every bedroom other than the kid’s room is bath attached.
