Use the right helmet; your life is too precious

Many youth consider helmet as a mere toy. Young bikers make it a habit not to wear it while riding their fancy two-wheelers. They should remember that a two-wheeler ride is always risky as they could lose balance any time and fall. In other words, an accident can take place any time.

Bikers invite accidents when they ride with one hand while using a mobile phone with the other - all the time without a helmet. This presents a very big danger. More than the rider, it is the life of the pillion rider that is at bigger risk.

Another suicidal tendency is to carry more than one pillion rider. Those engaged in such dangerous thrills should remember that in case of an accident, the head injury suffered could endanger life.

But using the wrong hamlet also won't help. Many people use plastic helmets which would splinter even under a minor impact. Ideally, the helmet should fit the head and lock properly.

Head injuries are a nightmare not only for the relatives of the patient but also neurosurgeons. Damage to the head presents an insurmountable challenge to even the world’s best neurosurgeons. Nobody has found a way to repair a damaged brain. One can only wait for the brain to heal by itself.

The outcome can never be predicted. The result may be life or death. An injury to the brain cannot be bandaged, nor can it be set right by surgery nor brought back in shape with a mould. It is all a big gamble. Man is yet to even fully map the brain. It is of utmost importance that we take care to ensure no damage occurs to this vital organ.

Tips for using helmets

» Full-face helmets which cover the entire face and also protect the eyes and jaw are the safest. Ideally, they should weigh less than half a kilo. Always purchase helmets with ISI marks.

» Place the helmet on your head to check that it fits correctly. Never go for big or small ones.

» Tie a towel on your head before placing the helmet to prevent hair loss. After every use, keep the helmet upside down to ensure that fungus does not grow due to moisture. The inner parts should be wiped with dry spirit and washable models cleaned thoroughly using water.

» If the strap of the helmet is damaged or cracks develop on the exterior, a new one should be bought.
