At a time when we are increasingly getting disconnected from the food we eat, growing our own veggies seems to be the best way forward. Apparently, the easiest way to take on a proactive relationship with what you eat is to grow some of it yourself.
Not only does that connect you with what you’re eating, it also offers massive nutritional benefits. Studies say nutrient degradation occurs rapidly after harvesting. The quicker you can eat your produce after it’s been harvested, the better. Having a backyard or balcony full of fruits and veggies is a great reminder to do so.
All you need to make an awesome kitchen garden for yourself is a five-feet-long and two-and-a-half-feet-wide space on your balcony or sit-out.
Set up an Intelligent Kitchen Guard. Fourteen growbags can be placed on this in four levels. Since drip irrigation is part of the method, there is no need for watering the plants. The facility provides water whenever plants need it and doesn't cause any waste. All you need is a link to the pipeline at home.
Bio-fertilizers needed for the cultivation can be purchased along with the Kitchen Guard for an additional payment. Packed cow urine, biogas slurry, cow dung powder, etc., will be available from two farms in the district in packs of 10, 5 and 2 kilograms.
Space is provided on the Guard to keep it. The garden is more useful for those who live in flats. The garden can be shifted anywhere for cleaning the balcony. The idea was implemented by P.A. Sanjay and Pradeep Kumar who run farms at Iraviperoor in Thiruvalla and Kulathuman in Konni.
The idea of bio-fertilizers was born from a need to dispose off waste from the farm. They've obtained patent for the Kitchen Guard. A Guard that can keep 10 bags costs 4,500 rupees.
