Palakkad: A celebrated children’s literature writer has set up a library for children in a 250-sq ft space on the first floor of his house. K.N. Kutty Kadambazhipuram, alias Kunduvampadam Kunduveettil Narayanan Kutty, who teaches Hindi at the local government upper primary school, started the library in March last year with over 400 books in his possession and 300 plus he collected from others.
There are 1,100 books available at the library, which is frequented by many children. The library was named “Thoolika” and it was formally inaugurated on May 17.
Kutty, whose name means child in Malayalam, spends time in the library with children after he returns from school and narrates stories for them. He believes that narrating poems and stories to children will help them be more attentive in classes that could otherwise become boring.
Kutty grew up listening to tales from his father Kunduvampadam Aiyappan, who was a chenda (drum) artiste. That's how he learned to differentiate between grandma stories, folk tales, mythology and renaissance stories. In 2000, he published an anthology of poems “Oru Pookkaalam Koodi” (Another Spring).
Kutty remembers that it was late writer T.C. John who gave him the courage to speak up and write frankly.
