Malayali siblings in Sharjah receive awards in memory of princess Diana Aman and Jehan

Dubai: Two Malayali siblings were among a group of inspirational youngsters selected for the first awards instituted in memory of Diana, the princess of Wales who died in a car crash in Paris 20 years ago.

Aman Iqbal Ibrahim (16), a student of the Our Own English Boys High School in Sharjah, received the Diana Legacy Award from the princess’ sons William and Harry at St James Palace in London along with 19 other youngsters from around the world.

His sister Jehan (9), a student of the Our Own English High School, was selected for the Diana Award at the Instagram office in London. The awards were presented to 200 youngsters from around the world.

Aman was selected for the award for his humanitarian work amid the labor camps in the emirate. He organized a group of youngsters to distribute food packs in the labor camps. At least 6,000 laborers have benefited from Aman’s initiative over the last three years.

Aman and Jehan, whose unique fundraising initiative - making and selling paper ornaments to their colleagues and friends - for the organizations working for the street children in India impressed the Diana Award committee. The kids found inspiration from their parents.

Dr Sangeet Ibrahim, a vice president of the Sharjah Islamic Bank, and Dr Sunaina Iqbal are involved in charity works. Dr Iqbal, who hails from Kochi, runs an association named Destination Success UAE with an aim to help out 10 lakh people in her lifetime.

The family had won the Sheikh Hamdan family award last year.
