Kollam: A A-class contractor, who reportedly could not get pending dues cleared from the Kerala government, killed himself inside an office in Kollam Wednesday.

A. Augustine alias Binoy, 43, of Aryankavu was reportedly the victim of official apathy. He had to get about Rs 1 crore from various government departments including forest and irrigation departments.

Earlier, a farmer had committed suicide outside a village office in Kozhikode as he was allegedly frustrated by officials stonewalling his attempts over the past 18 months to pay land tax for his property.

After the incident kicked up a row, the Kerala government had decided to clear the debts of the farmer.
