Women ganged up & brutally assaulted Uber driver, claims eyewitness Shinoj was in the cab when 3 women allegedly attacked a Uber driver in Kochi in September. Screengrab

Kochi: Days after three women allegedly manhandled a Uber cab driver in the city, an eyewitness has come forward pointing fingers at the female passengers.

Shinoj, who was in the cab during the incident, said the women ganged up and attacked the driver. He also rejected the charges that the driver, Shefeeq, misbehaved with the women.

The eyewitness, who works in a private firm in Tripunithura, completely agreed with the driver's allegation that he was brutally assaulted and the women even hit him on the head with stones.

As per the complaint filed by Shefeeq to the police, the women had booked the cab using the Uber pool facility which allows passengers headed to the same place book the same car and share the fare. However, the irate women then got into an altercation with the driver after they saw another passenger, Shinoj, in the vehicle. The driver refused to yield to their demand that the other passenger already traveling in the car be asked to exit.

The women, all hailing from Kannur, then allegedly manhandled the Uber driver around Wednesday noon near Vyttila.

The women were arrested after recording the statement of the cab driver. They were later released on station bail, the police said.

The driver, a Kumbalam native, was admitted to the government general hospital here.
