Chennai: Safeer Karim, an Indian police service (IPS) officer arrested on charges of cheating in the UPSC mains exam, has been sent to 15-day judicial remand in Chennai.
Safeer’s wife, Joicy Joyce, who was arrested for helping him cheat in the exam, took along her year-and-a-half-old girl child to the jail. Currently, she is housed in the Puzhal Women Prison in Chennai after a local court sent her to 15-day judicial remand. Safeer is lodged in the men’s block of the same prison. Three years ago, Safeer had cleared the fourth paper of the civil services main exam which covered the areas of ‘Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude’ with high marks.
However, his performance at the police academy, Hyderabad, was below par, his superiors said.
Safeer, a graduate in Electronics Engineering, had secured a top rank in the Common Admission Test (CAT) for MBA admissions. But he chose to pursue civil services and joined a training academy in New Delhi.
Safeer, who had cleared the IPS in the 2014 civil service exam with the 112th rank, wrote the mains exam again this year to improve his rank and move into the Indian administrative service (IAS).
Safeer was actively conducting civil service coaching classes before he got into IPS. Later he expanded his coaching classes to Kochi and Kozhikode and later to Hyderabad and Bhopal.
Safeer and his student at the coaching class, Joicy, fell in love and married later.
Dr Ram Babu, the director of Joicy and Safeer's coaching center, was arrested for helping him cheat in the exam using bluetooth devices and cameras.
