Palakkad: Nearly 20 constables who were listening to the speech of chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan after their passing out parade collapsed at Muttikulangara KAP 2 Battalion on Saturday. Some of the tired and exhausted cops were taken on stretchers while others were helped by police officers to move to shades and were given first aid.

When the chief minister saw the constables collapsing, he ended his speech. "Blazing sun is causing problems to some," he said as he cut short his speech. The chief minister then returned to his seat and checked with police chief Loknath Behera about what had happened. Battalion DIG K Shaheen Ahmed, and those in-charge of the parade have been asked to file a report after conducting an inquiry.

The battalion authorities say that seven of them who collapsed had light fever and this could be the reason for them to fall on the parade ground.

The temperature measured at the Mundur near Muttikulangara on Saturday was 36 degrees Celsius. In the past two days, 420 trainees from KAP I & II battalions were given strenuous training for the passing out parade. They had also worked to beautify the ground. All these might have led to their exhaustion.
