Thodupuzha: Display boards and posters of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un put up as part of the Nedumkandom area committee meeting of the CPM drew ridicule from Congress MLA V T Balram. “It seems the photo of Kim is original and not morphed! Maybe the CPM secretary is unable to keep count of the new generations of Kim II-sung’s family,” said Balram in a sarcastic social media post.
With the issue turning controversial, top CPM leaders in the district asked activists to remove the display materials.
The posters and boards, which appeared in the Assembly constituency of electricity minister M M Mani, had details of the area committee meeting. Nedumkandom town and Thannimmoodu Junction were some of the areas where posters with Kim’s pictures were seen. Some delegates, during the area committee meeting, also raised the issue of putting up display material with the picture of Kim - a cruel dictator who eliminated even his kith and kin to remain in power.
The CPM, in connection with its committee meetings, puts up publicity items with pictures of noted Communist leaders belonging to several countries. However, the inclusion of the North Korean despot among the pantheon of Communist legends led to a sense of resentment among the CPM activists also.
When contacted, the party’s district leadership said it came to know about the boards from media reports. “The district leaders have no role in putting up the boards,” said K K Jayachandran, the CPM district secretary.
