Balram office The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) workers on Saturday vandalized MLA VT Balram's Thrithala office.

Palakkad: As controversy raged over Congress MLA VT Balram's comments over Communist leader AK Gopalan's marriage, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) workers on Saturday vandalized his Thrithala office.

The police have arrested 10 DYFI workers over the incident.

The Thrithala MLA, landed himself in the controversy, after he said in a Facebook post that AKG, as the leader is popularly known, married Susheela, when she was only 22.

"They were in a relationship for nearly 10 years, then how old was she when their love affair started," Balram sought to know. The MLA had quoted from an article published in The Hindu in 2001, while making the controversial comments on social media along with an hashtag ‘#ParayendathParanjitePokunullu’ (will leave only after making the point).

The Congress MLA's remarks drew widespread condemnation on social media and some even alleged that Balram had virtually called the noted Communist leader 'a child molester'.

Many communist leaders had come out against the MLA and the youth wing of the party had taken out a protest march Saturday evening, during which the agitated workers vandalized the office. Earlier in the day, miscreants had thrown liquor bottles at the office.

What action will the Congress take?

CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan too condemned the statements.

"I would like to know what action the Congress would take against the MLA?" Kodiyeri asked, while pointing out that this was the party that suspended their senior leader Mani Shankar Iyer for his remarks against prime minister Narendra Modi.

The Congress MLA even faced the ire of his own party leaders.
