Kuttippuram: The police bomb squad conducting a search under the bridge across the Bharathapuzha river here has recovered four more pieces of pierced steel planking usually used by the army. The search was launched after mines and ammunition were found from the spot.

Some portions of the planking were fished out earlier also. The search was being conducted jointly by bomb squads from Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad and Thrissur. Water was drained from the shallow part of the river and an earthmover deployed to recover the planking.

Officials attached to the bomb squad said steel planking is used by the army to enable smooth passage of armored tanks and other vehicles through marshy areas.

However, according to the local people, the planking is more likely to have been brought to the spot during the construction of the Kuttippuram bridge to prevent lorries carrying construction material from getting stuck in the sand.
