AKG row: Balram won't apologize but wants to end controversy Balram had earlier made clear that his criticism of AKG was to counter provocation in similar respect by CPM workers and said he does not claim everything he said is fully true.

Kochi: Thrithala MLA V T Balram says he will not apologize for the critical comments he made against Communist leader A K Gopalan. Appearing on Manorama News' 'Nere Chovve' show, Balram made clear that he will not bow down to threats warning him from coming out of his house, made by followers of the Communist party. The Congress MLA felt that the CPM's continued stance after he had tried to clear the air was pitiable.

Balram says that in hindsight he feels he should not have been goaded into making those comments, saying he had merely retaliated at one statement in due kind. However, saying he had no intention on letting this verbal joust continue, Balram requested the ruling CPM to take the lead in ending the spat. While claiming to understand and accept the criticism, his statements have drawn from senior members of the UDF, Balram said that he spoke out keeping in mind the emotions of party workers. Balram argued that it is not only those on the ruling faction who enjoyed freedom of speech.

Balram had earlier made clear that his criticism of AKG was to counter provocation in similar respect by CPM workers and said he does not claim everything he said is fully true. Saying he has no intention of ever repeating those comments again, Balram hoped the controversy could be put to bed.

Meanwhile, former chief minister Oommen Chandy, KPCC chief M M Hassan, and Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan were among the senior leaders who hit out against Balram's comments. The Congress completely pushed aside the MLAs criticisms and issued orders to their members to never make such public comments again.
