Kannur: P Jayarajan has retained his position as Kannur district secretary of the CPM, overcoming the state committee’s criticism that he had tried to build a personality cult around him. Reelected by an overwhelming majority, Jayarajan demonstrated his clout among party members in the district.
During the discussion on the opening day of the CPM district meet, delegates belonging to Koothuparamba and Mattannur area committees had remarked that the stand adopted by the state committee against Jayarajan was uncalled for. In the sessions held on the subsequent days, a few delegated criticized Jayarajan, but a majority supported him, leading to his re-election as the district secretary.
The meet also elected a 49-member district committee, which has six fresh faces. While DYFI district secretary V K Sinoj has been included, K Kunhappa and P Vasudevan were dropped.
Jayarajan had taken over as the CPM district secretary back in December 2010 following the ouster of P Sasi from the post. He was subsequently re-elected during the district meets held at Payyannur in 2012 and Koothuparamba in 2015.
A native of East Kathiroor, Jayarajan has represented Koothuparamba in the Assembly thrice. When his victory during the 2001 elections was annulled by the Supreme Court, he repeated his win in a by-poll held in 2005 with a record majority. He was again elected to the Assembly from Koothuparamba in 2006.
Jayarajan had earlier held the posts of party Koothuparamba area secretary, SFI district secretary, member of CPM district council and Deshabhimani general manager.
