The incident is a blow to the task master image of CM Pinarayi Vijayan. File photoThiruvananthapuram: In a rare instance, a special meeting of the State Cabinet on Friday did not take any decision due to lack of quorum. Thirteen ministers of the 19-member Cabinet failed to turn up for the meeting.
The agenda of the Cabinet meeting was to renew the Ordinances which were about to lapse. The Cabinet will now meet on Monday for the purpose.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said that it was a shame that ministers failed to turn up for a scheduled Cabinet meeting. “The Cabinet cannot take decisions. The state has never witnessed such a shocking situation before,” he added.
Ministers are more interested in taking part in party meetings rather than carrying out their administrative responsibilities. It was highly deplorable that the Ordinances could not be renewed.
The chief minister had earlier said that ministers would be present in the state capital on five days a week. “Now, by being absent at even Cabinet meetings, the ministers have proved that they are unfit to rule the state,” said Chennithala.
CPI’s four ministers are away in Wayanad attending the party’s district meet. The other ministers had programs in their respective districts. The regular Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday had scheduled the special cabinet on Friday to extend the validity of as many as 19 ordinances.
Ordinances lapse six weeks after the start of an Assembly session. Though this time period is not over since the start of the session which ended recently, there are no legal obstacles to renew the ordinances, according to the law department. The special cabinet meeting was scheduled following this advice.
