Thiruvananthapuram: An accused in the sensational TP Chandrasekharan murder case, P K Kunjananthan, has been frequently out on parole since the LDF government came to power in May 2016.
The CPM area committee member enjoyed the facility for a total of 193 days between May 2016 and January 2018 and almost every month since his party-led government came to power in Kerala. Kunjananthan was allotted parole 15 times in the 20 months spanning this period. This was revealed by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a reply in the legislative assembly.
Kunjananthan, a CPM committee member of Panoor area in Kannur, was handed a life sentence in January 2014 for the murder of the RMP leader. He was retained in the local area committee during the two CPM meetings while he was in jail. He had attended the last area committee meeting after coming out of the Kannur Central Jail on parole.
Kunjananthan was granted parole thrice for a total period of 38 days in June and August 2016, soon after the LDF government was sworn in. He was out of the confines of the jail for 79 days in 2016 and for 98 days the following year. The murder accused availed ordinary leave seven times and emergency leave eight times. Often he cited wife's treatment and the need to stay with his family as reasons for applying for parole.
