Thiruvananthapuram: It has been confirmed that the nine-year-old girl was given HIV infected blood during treatment at Regional Cancer Centre (RCC). The AIDS Control Society found that one of the blood donors was HIV positive. This was not detected earlier as the blood transfusion took place during the window period of the disease.

The window period is time between potential exposure to HIV infection and the point when the test will give an accurate result. This period can extent up to four weeks after being infected by the virus.

The child passed away recently. Following which, the high court ordered the RCC director to preserve the child’s medical records and samples of blood and body fluids. The directive was given by justice Sunil Thomas based on a sub petition filed by the child’s father in the backdrop of the child’s death.

The child, who was under treatment for bone marrow cancer for over a year, had died at Govt. T D Medical College Alappuzha. She was admitted there initially for a fever. Though discharged, she was admitted again on last Wednesday morning with the complaint of breathing difficulty, but died in the afternoon.

The girl was referred to RCC from Govt. T D Medical College Alappuzha in March last year. After she was found to be HIV positive, a big controversy had erupted. But a lab in Chennai reported last month that the child was not HIV positive.

Meanwhile, the girl’s father repeated his statement that negligence in the treatment had led to his daughter becoming HIV positive. The RCC authorities had approached him to settle the issue, he added.
