No injuries on Liga's body, did a toxic fruit cause her death? Liga's sister Ilze identified the highly-decomposed body, which was spotted on Friday afternoon by two local fishermen.

Thiruvananthapuram: The postmortem examination performed on the body of a foreign woman, which was recovered near an isolated area in Vazhamuttom, Thiruvallam, has confirmed that there were no weapon-inflicted injuries.

The body, presumed to be of Latvian national Liga Skromane, who went missing since March 14, had no internal wounds or marks of strangulation that could harm the bones or internal organs, the autopsy report said. The doctors assumed that the head and the upper torso could have been detached from the body as a result of decay under natural conditions.

The police have gathered CCTV footages that showed the victim alighting from an autorickshaw at Kovalam and buying cigarettes from a local shop. It is suspected that she might have walked along the coastline to reach the mangrove forest in Chenthilakkari near Vazhamuttom, where her body was spotted on Friday afternoon by two local fishermen.

Cerbera odollam, commonly known as the suicide tree, was found growing throughout the area. Since she had attempted suicide twice in the recent past, the police did not rule out the possibility of her consuming the cardiotoxic fruit to kill herself.

As no injuries were found on the body, a detailed investigation is required to establish the possibility of any external involvement in the incident.

Although the victim’s relatives have identified the body, her DNA samples would be sent to the Rajiv Gandhi Centre of Biotechnology in Thiruvananthapuram to confirm the identity.

Meanwhile, police chief Loknath Behera informed that the supervision of the detailed investigation has been entrusted with IG (Thiruvananthapuram range) Manoj Abraham.

Statements from the relatives of the victim will be recorded and the probe will look into the suspicions raised by them, he said.
