Thiruvananthapuram: Former DySP K Radhakrishnan, who first investigated the murder of NDF functionary Mohammed Fazal, was brutally attacked and trapped in an immoral trafficking case after the finger of suspicion for the ghastly murder was pointed to CPM leaders, revealed a state intelligence report.
The DySP, accompanied by his driver, was at the residence of a friend called Rajesh when a group of DYFI activists barged into the house and assaulted him and the house owner, alleging immoral activities. The incident took place on December 14, 2006, a hartal day, when Radhakrishnan was in charge of the Taliparamba sub-division.
A case was also registered against the two based on a complaint lodged by the Taliparamba municipal vice-chairman, a CPM leader. Subsequently, Radhakrishnan was suspended from service by the then LDF government.
However, a probe carried out by the intelligence wing found that the attack was in retaliation for making attempts to arraign CPM workers in the Fazal murder case. The case was investigated by the then ADGP (Intelligence) T P Senkumar based on a complaint filed with the DGP in 2012.
Though the CPM had maintained that BJP-RSS activists were behind the murder of Fazal, who was hacked to death near Thalassery on October 22, 2006, the then District Crime Records Bureau (DCRB) DySP Radhakrishnan had confirmed the role of the CPM in the brutal murder.
When local party leaders Karayi Rajan and Karayi Chandrashekharan emerged as the key suspects in the case, the investigation team was directed to suspend the inquiry by the government.
Radhakrishnan proceeded with the case and gathered substantial evidence including call data records to zero in on some of the prominent CPM leaders in the district. However, the official was removed as the SIT head the very next day he summoned Kodi Suni to the station for questioning. Rajesh, who suffered grievous injuries in the attack, died a month after the incident. Radhakrishnan sustained serious spinal-cord injury and was under treatment for about one-an-a-half years.
Though Senkumar had submitted a detailed report to the DGP in 2012, no further action was initiated.
The High Court had dismissed the immoral trafficking case registered against Radhakrishnan.
Observing that it was a clear case of political vendetta with the intention of maligning a dutiful officer, the bench headed by justice V Ramkumar also ordered to withdraw his suspension order.
