Shuhaib murder case charge sheet points to local plot Shuhaib, who was Mattannur block president of the Youth Congress, was hacked by a gang around midnight on February 12 at Edayannur.

Mattannur: The February 12 murder of Youth Congress leader S P Shuhaib at Edayannur was the result of political enmity and the plot was hatched locally, says the police charge sheet submitted in the Mattannur court.

The charge-sheet, submitted by circle inspector A V John, does not link the conspiracy for murder to the state leadership or any prominent leader of the CPM. The Congress had aired allegations of a high-level conspiracy involving prominent CPM leaders.

The charge-sheet says the provocation for the murder was Shuhaib's intervention in the conflict between CPM and Congress workers. The police haven't sought an expanded probe into the alleged conspiracy.

Eleven CPM workers have been charged for the murder and six people accused of being part of the conspiracy to murder are yet to be seized.

Shuhaib was brutally hacked to death at around 10.45 on the night of February 12, as he was having a tea at a wayside eatery at Edayannur. He had 37 hack wounds on his person.

The charge-sheet says the murder plot was hatched by local leaders after CITU worker Baiju, a resident of Chalod, was injured in a CPM-Congress clash at Edayannur town on January 12. Shuhaib was an accused in the clash and also was accused in a confrontation at a school.

The Congress leadership as well as Shuhaib's family had sought a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation, alleging that the police was trying to keep off top leaders from the case and to save the real culprits.
