Kozhikode: When the fourth member of a family also died due to Nipah in Perambra on Thursday, the families of the victims are experiencing ostracisation, says a local representative. Perambra block panchayat member Jithesh Muthukad, in his request to district collector UV Jose, said how the people were finding it difficult to carry out their routine functions.
The immediate relatives of the victims, are being shunned away even by officials at the health department. They are not able to purchase goods from a local shop, since all of them in the locality know each other and fear that every other person in the family would have contracted the virus, Jithesh said.
He said the immediate intervention from authorities was required.
Jithesh also requested the collector to curb the spread of fake messages on the social media regarding the outbreak of Nipah. This would bring back harmony to the village, which was now a ‘graveyard’. He also listed the names of the immediate relatives of two people who had died of Nipah.
