New Delhi: After the crucial Karnataka assembly election, Congress leadership has made some changes to key posts.

Former Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy has been made the general secretary of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC). Chandy, who replaces senior leader Digvijaya Singh, will be given the charge of Andhra Pradesh.

Party spokesperson Gaurav Gogoi has also been appointed as the party's in-charge of West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, replacing C P Joshi.

Gogoi is son of former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.

The party appreciates the hard work and contribution of Digvijaya Singh, who will be stepping down from his responsibility as AICC general secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh, statement from party general secretary Ashok Gehlot said.

He also said that the party appreciates the hard work and contribution of Dr C P Joshi, who will be stepping down from his responsibility as AICC general secretary in-charge of West Bengal and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

The changes will be enforced with immediate effect, the party said.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, MP, was one of the first to congratulate Chandy on his new party post.

Another AICC general secretary from the state is K C Venugopal, MP. Past AICC general secretaries from Kerala, include the late C M Stephen and A K Antony.

Will give 100 per cent : Chandy

Senior Congress leader Oommen Chandysaid the job of AICC general secretary, in-charge of Andhra Pradesh was a challenging one and he would be 100 per cent dedicated to the new role.

The former Kerala chief minister said he was grateful to party president Rahul Gandhi for appointing him as the party general secretary.

He said the big role was given to him as part of the bid by the Congress chief to strengthen the party.

"It is a challenging job. I am grateful to the Congress president. It is the time for the unity of secular forces. I will try to give 100 per cent to the new role," Chandy told reporters here.
