Kollam: Rail traffic came to a halt after a tree fell on the tracks near Kollam Mayyanad railway gate around 8 pm on Monday. A jackfruit tree was uprooted and landed on the railway electric lines before it came to rest on the track. Smoke and fire were witnessed at the spot following the incident.
After the disruption was reported, the Malabar Express from Thiruvananthapuram was halted at Paravur. Efforts are continuing to remove the tree, which has blocked both tracks.

Railway officials said that it would take at least three hours to clear the tracks and restore traffic. Train services along the route during the night will be affected. Meanwhile, the Kozhikode-Thiruvananthapuram Jansatabdi Express has been detained at Karunagappally and the Thiruvananthapuram- bound Venad Express is running behind schedule.
