Keralite youth drowns in Michigan as he tries to save another Sumith, who worked as a business manager, is the son of Puthenkavu Ezhikathuzhathil Chacko Alex (Baby) and Kunjumol.

Detroit, Michigan: A Malayali youth drowned in a river in the United States of America while trying to save another man from drowning.

Sumith Jacob Alex (32), a native of Puthenkanvu in Ernakulam district, died on Wednesday in the Black River here in Michigan. Robert John Levandoski (47), whom Sumith had tried to save, too did not survive. It was only 9 months ago that Sumith had got married to Jana Rachael.

The accident took place when Sumith and Jana, along with Jana’s parents were enjoying a boat ride at the nearby Black River. The youngster jumped into the water when Levandonski’s dinghy boat turned upside down after getting caught in the waves generated by another big boat. But Sumith, who hadn’t worn the life vest, couldn’t survive the extremely cold water in the river. It is reported that Levandoski too hadn’t worn the life jacket.

Both bodies were recovered from the river by Wednesday night.

Sumith, who works as a business manager, is the son of Puthenkavu Ezhikathuzhathil Chacko Alex (Baby) and Kunjumol. Sumith’s family stays at the Clinton Township in Michigan.
