Aluva: Usman Maruthumkudi, 38, who was allegedly beaten up by policemen in plainclothes near Aluva on Tuesday after his bike collided with the car they were travelling in, has been remanded to police custody till June 22.
He has been charged with assaulting police personnel and obstructing cops from performing their duty.
The magistrate ordered his remand after visiting Usman in the hospital.
The police had registered his arrest and submitted the remand report in the court on Friday. Usman is free to apply for bail while he is still under care at the hospital.
The magistrate had visited the hospital on Friday but could meet Usman because he was in the intensive care unit after an operation.
After he was moved to the room, the magistrate paid a visit again. Meanwhile, though four policemen have been charged with assaulting Usman, it is alleged that the enquiry is moving at a snail's pace.
False bribery charges
In the meanwhile, Pookkatupadi resident Ismail reportedly confessed to the special branch Deputy Superintendent of Police, V G Ravindranath, that his allegations against the Edathala police station were fabricated.
He had earlier said that he had bribed the policemen at Edathala police station with electronic goods in return of various favours.
CM telling lies, says Usman
Usman, who is undergoing treatment after being assaulted by cops, said that allegations made against him by the chief minister and cops were baseless.
According to him it was the driver of the car who first assaulted him when he was talking to his friend on a bike at Kunjattukara junction.
"After that, others in the car came out and hit me. Though traders from nearby shops tried to intervene, I was dragged into the car and taken to the police station. It was then that I understood that they were policemen.
“In the police station, they took me to the first floor. There I was brutally assaulted. I had nothing to do in the seven-year-old case where police allege that I was involved. I was named among several recognisable faces.”
CPM leader and Keezhmad panchayat permanent committee president Abilish Ashokan too has come forward supporting the claims of Usman.
