While Shubhangi Swaroop from Uttar Pradesh’s Tilhar is set to become the first woman pilot of the navy, the other three including a Keralite will become part of the force’s armament inspection division, where no female officer had worked before.
Swaroop, who completed the six-month naval-orientation course at the Ezimala academy, will now take pilot training for the next one year. Successful completion of that will earn her the feat of the first woman pilot of the country’s naval force.
At least 10 cadets from each batch at Ezimala academy go for pilot training, said the officials. But this is the first time a woman has opted for it.
Swaroop said she would do her best to meet expectations.
The engineering graduate is the daughter of commander Gyan Swaroop, who works at the Vishakhapatnam Dockyard, and Kalpana.
S Sakthimaya of Maruthamkuzhi in Thiruvananthapuram, A. Roopa from Puducherry and Delhi’s Aastha Segal are the women joining the armament inspection division.
They also competed the naval-orientation course and will now undergo training on various weapons.
Sakthimaya’s father, K. Sasidhara Kurup, works at the Kerala Water Authority. Her mother is Sridevi.
A total of 328 officers were inducted into the naval forces at a passing out ceremony on Wednesday.
