Mumbai: The wife of the man accused of mid-flight sexual harassment of a teen bollywood actress has come out in defense of her husband.
Calling the entire episode a farce, she said that the young actress was lying about the incident. Her husband was innocent, she claimed.
“This is a publicity stunt”, Divya, wife of the accused Vikas Sachdeva, said.
The young girl should have raised an alarm earlier if she was abused, according to Divya.
In the meanwhile a court here on Monday sent the accused to police custody till December 13.
A handcuffed Sachdeva was taken to the Dindoshi Sessions Court in Goregaon east this afternoon and has been charged under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other charges.
The teenaged actor, who was traveling with her mother, had accused a co-passenger on a Delhi Mumbai flight of molesting her.
Divya's next line of defense was that her husband was returning to Bombay after his uncle's funeral, probably implying that the accused would not have been in a frame of mind to commit such an offense.
“He was tired and just wanted to sleep. He had even asked the air hostess not to wake him up for dinner and just sought a blanket,” she said.
According to her, the teen actor shouted at him when the flight was landing and asked the 39-year-old Vikas to put his foot down from the armrest of her seat.
The accused man's wife also said that her husband had apologized to the girl.
“He is being framed. There has never been an incident like this before. This is all untrue,” she said.
Vikas had allegedly brushed his leg against the actor's neck and shoulders till she raised an alarm, almost at at the same time when the flight was descending for landing.
The actor had come live on Instagram immediately after landing and shared her ordeal. In a video, she said her requests for help were ignored by the airline staff. She was in tears.
The Mumbai police registered an FIR against him on Sunday and arrested him on Monday.
According to national media, the counsel for Vikas had also demanded that the case must be heard in a normal court and not in a POCSO court as the “victim is almost 18 years.”
