Under the 'Agnipath' scheme, around 45,000 people aged between 17.5 and 21 years will be inducted into the armed forces for a four-year period, following which most of them will have to take compulsory retirement sans pension or gratuity benefits although some will be retained.
Those who cleared the exams will be eligible to appear for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview rounds conducted by the Ministry of Defence for admission in the army, navy and air force wings of the NDA.
He will be succeeding Gen M M Naravane. At present, Lt Gen Pande is serving as the vice-chief of the Army Staff.
Under SSC, women officers are initially taken for a period of five years, which is extendable up to 14 years. Permanent commissioning will allow them to serve till the age of retirement.
