Raina was one of the regulars in the Indian squad for much of Dhoni's reign as captain of the squad but his international appearances have dried up since Kohli took over.
It has now emerged that the team management was not particularly happy with Raina's "conduct" during the quarantine time, something which infuriated CSK owner and former BCCI president N Srinivasan.
The senior batsman on Sunday paid a glowing tribute to his former captain, calling him "one of the most influential man in the history of Indian cricket".
More than the runs, it was the manner and the circumstances in which he scored them which made a captain like Dhoni back him to the hilt.
Raina has returned to India due to personal reasons, said CSK CEO.
Raina made his ODI debut in July 2005 against Sri Lanka at the young age of 19. He is the first Indian batsman to hit a century in all three formats of international cricket.
Dravid, who had presented Raina with the ODI and Test caps, paid glowing tribute to the left-handed batsman.
CSK owner N Srinivasan has reportedly said Raina's sudden exit left the team in a bit of shock but skipper Dhoni "was in complete control of the situation."
