Kottarakkara: The playground of the Government Boys High School here is facing a threat from the elements. At an elevation of around six metres from the road, the ground has a protective rock wall, portions of which crumble during every rain.
The wall on the eastern and northern sides have almost fully collapsed. With the wall absent, the earth holding the ground slips to the road, which also causes the ground to shrink. All the fallen material is taken away to clear the road. The remaining portion of the wall can collapse any time now.
Though several projects, including one for setting up a multi-purpose synthetic stadium, were planned to protect the ground, all of them have remained on paper. The playground is the only open space in Kottarakkara which can host events like district sports meets. It alleged that the mafia supplying earth also has an eye on the ground, which calls for urgent measures to save the play area.
