Karunagappally: Lack of enough personnel is hampering the functioning of the police station in Karunagappally.
The station has only 65 cops to maintain law and order in the municipality and nine villages that include the entire Thodiyoor and Kulasekharapuram panchayats, and parts of Alappad and Thazhava.
The station gets more than 100 complaints a day. The shortage of personnel affects effective enquiry into these complaints. The service of policemen is required for janamaitri police, student police cadet and cases in courts.
In the light of frequent traffic jams and accidents, a traffic police unit was allotted for Karunagappally, and the then minister Ramesh Chennithala even inaugurated it. But the unit is yet to become operational due to lack of staff.
A few traffic wardens are deployed to maintain traffic now. If reforms recommended by the traffic advisory committee are to be implemented effectively, more personnel are needed.
Last year, 4,627 criminal cases were registered in the police station.
