Kottayam: Humorous responses to a question on acclaimed physicist ECG Sudarshan have set off ripples of laughter among teachers assigned for valuation duty of higher secondary examination papers.
The 11th question of the Malayalam Paper II exam was: “'It was that day’s Malayalam class which inspired me to become a scientist.'” What exactly did inspire ECG Sudarshan?”
Many of the candidates seemed to know nothing about the famous scientist, but they made sure that the evaluators had a good time checking their papers as they wrote at length about electrocardiogram (ECG) test underwent by some Sudarshan!
“Nobody detected the change in Sudarashan’s ECG patterns. Even the doctors were stunned seeing his ECG results,” so goes one of the answers. There were others who took it as an opportunity to bring out their creative side with responses like “Sudarshan was motivated to do scientific experiments after he underwent the electrocardiogram test once.”
There were hilarious answers to the ninth question in the same paper as well. The question was to give a brief description about a short-film made to introduce the art from of Padayani. Some of the students got it completely wrong, mistaking the word Padayani for Pattini (starvation). They penned down different forms of poverty and starvation while a few went a step further by writing in detail about Madhu, the Attapady tribal youth who was lynched for allegedly stealing a morsel of food. Some other candidates mistook the word Padayani for thadayana (check dam) and wrote elaborately on the importance of check dams in water conservation.
To a question regarding the folk art form of Kakkarissi Natakam, some responded that M N Karassery is a playwright and wrote about his famous dramas!
The story of the movie Baahubali too made it to exam scripts as an answer to a question on Damayanthi and Bahukan in the Nalacharitham Kathakali play.
There were students who wrote about travelogues aired on Safari channel to a question on the genre of travel literature.
“It is desirable for medicos and architects to read novels like 'Arogya Niketan' by Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay and 'Bhoomiyude Avakashikal' by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer respectively. Give a brief description of the appositeness of this statement,” was another question in the Malayalam paper II. To which, there were responses such as ‘Sir, this question is out of syllabus, and this is meant for MBBS students.”
There were students who scribbled poems apart from their name and phone number on the answer sheet. One of the evaluators came across an answer script that carried the following note: “Sir, I guess you are a Malayalam teacher. Please read my poem and let me know your opinion. Here is my phone number.”
Though the teacher tried to call the students on that number, he did not pick up the phone.
