In Madhu's mourning village, Manju Warrier finds a rising star

Agali: Manju Warrier was faced with another celebrity when she visited a tribal hamlet in Attappadi. “I am a forward,” Ajil told the actor as he dug into the Vishu feast laid out on a plantain leaf in front of him. When he saw the incredulous look on the actor’s face, he explained that his job was to dodge the other players and score goals for his team.

The young footballer and the rest of the community in the Chindakki hamlet had a Vishu to remember when Manju Warrier organised a feast for them. The village was still mourning Madhu, the starved tribesman who was lynched by a few merchants who accused him of stealing food.

“Even when we celebrate Vishu, we are pained by unpleasant incidents from everywhere. We organised this gathering to spend some time with the grieving people,” Manju Warrier said.

The actor reached the hamlet around noon on Monday and chatted with Madhu’s mother Malli. She consoled Malli and Madhu’s sisters, Sarasu and Chandrika.

The feast was organised by the Manju Warrier Foundation. The actor later gifted Ajil and his teammates a football. She asked them which team they played for. “Kairali B,” they replied in unison. They said the B team was composed of children.

The foundation members had put up a makeshift marquee near Madhu’s house for serving the meals. Bineesh Chennai, CLSL director Ashokan Nenmara, Dr Shajahan, Ramachandran Wayanad and R Rangaswami Chindakki accompanied Manju Warrier to the hamlet.
