Legendary playback singer Dr K J Yesudas recently courted controversy when he pushed away a youth's hand when the latter tried to click a selfie with him. Yesudas even took the phone from the person who took the selfie and deleted the picture himself.
The incident, which happened in New Delhi, immediately set the social media abuzz with many opinions about the singer’s actions. The netizens are clearly divided over the issue with some supporting the veteran singer, while others vehemently criticizing him for snubbing a fan in public.
Meanwhile, a Facebook post by Anoop Kumbanadu, an expatriate who lives in the United Arab Emirates, throws light on Yesudas' aversion towards selfies and it is viral on social media. He wrote that he decided to post a note about the selfie controversy as a person who had got a chance to pose with Yesudas in a picture.
Anoop wrote, “It was a year ago that I met Yesudas at the Dubai airport. After enquiring whether he had a pleasant trip, I expressed my wish to click a picture with him. He told me I could take as many pictures as I wanted but said 'no' to selfies. When I asked him why he wouldn’t allow selfies, this is what he told me, “Men are social beings. We cannot survive without any assistance or cooperation from our fellow beings. Today’s generation never strive to build relations, instead they exist as isles of their own making. They wouldn’t ask anyone’s help even to click a picture for them. So for that very reason I do not like selfies at all.”
Anoop says that it was Yesudas himself who requested one of the passersby to click a picture for them. He added that Yesudas smiled when he showed an old picture which was taken almost 25 years ago during Anoop’s college days. In this old snap, the NRI and his friends are seen posing happily with the veteran singer.
“Be it with a celebrity or not, I believe that one should get the person's permission before clicking their picture,” Anoop concludes his Facebook post.
Along with the post, Anoop has also shared the old picture which was taken during his college days and also the one taken a year ago with the veteran singer.
