Paul Alex, CEO, Hound ElecticKochi: An electric superbike, a torch for the blind and a faster and cheaper technique for construction secured the first three prizes in an innovation contest organised by the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) as part of the Yes! Can summit in Kochi.
An electric bike that would give any sports bike a run for its money. The 60 HP superbike from Paul Alex and team that won the ‘Innovative Idea Award’ promises 170 kilometres per hour. The team is already working on a 100 HP bike.
The award winning team consists of six Kozhikode NIT alumni. Nabeel Abdulla, Arun Prabhakar, Midhun Mohan, Lakshmikanth Banjare and Zinekar Ahmed joined Alex in designing the bike. They plan to market the bike by forming a company called Hound Electrics.
The team won the first prize of Rs 1 lakh in the contest organised by the KSIDC.
A torch for the blind was Aflah Maddassery’s unique concept. The blind torch, which is opening new avenues for the visually impaired, has secured the second prize in the KSIDC contest of ideas.
For Aflah, the innovation is a tribute to his blind teacher Nasar. He started his experiments while he was in the plus-one class.
The equipment helps the blind identify the hurdles on the way. The device looks like a mobile phone. It sends out radio signals and senses any impediments on the way. It would alert the user by vibrating itself if he is about to bump into something. Aflah says the device can be marketed for about Rs 1,000.
The innovator from Edavanna in Malappuram district has completed the plus-two course from the Government Boys’ School at Manjeri. He is preparing for the entrance exam for engineering.
Thoufeeq Abdul Aziz has a technology that could revolutionise the construction sector. The civil engineer from Perumbavur secured the third prize in the innovation contest with his “rapid construction technique.”
Aziz is using the existing gypsum panel but the technology is far more superior. The panels are made of glass fibre reinforced gyspsum. Thoufeeq proposes to use the panels for the foundation and ceiling as well.
This technology would allow the completion of a house in 30 days, at a cost of Rs 900 per square foot. A model house using the technology has been made in IIT Madras.
The innovator, who completed civil engineering from Coimbatore, is immersed in ways to find new dimensions for the technology.
