#MunduMania : celebrating mundu this Onam | Video Post your 'mundu moments' along with #MunduMania on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram today itself and get featured in Onmanorama.

Up until a few years ago, the Malayalam equivalent of throwing down the gauntlets was perhaps hitching up the mundu to knee height, thanks to Mohanlal and his array of mustache-twirling movies. But today, mundu is just a leitmotif of Onam, much like the picture wing dragonfly (onathumpi) and the thatched leaf umbrella (olakkuda) the harvest festival is associated with.

And sadly, Keralite youth now needs YouTube videos titled ‘How to Tie a Mundu’ for wearing an ‘ottamundu’ they flicked from an elder family member’s wardrobe.

A Keralite man in a spotless cream kasavu mundu represents the quintessence of Kerala culture. Known and worn in different styles across India, a mundu is called dhoti in northern India; it's veshti in Tamil Nadu.

While many consider it as an inconvenient dress code for the fast-paced lifestyle of professionals, there are certain others who think the humble mundu make them look pretty old-fashioned.

However, Kerala’s politicians and older men still prefer mundu on all occasions. Although mundu has always been a favorite during Onam, it was Nivin Pauly-starrer Premam that actually catapulted its popularity among youngsters.

This Onam, Onmanorama is attempting to revive the vitality of this traditional attire through #MunduMania, a social media campaign. As a starter, here is a two-minute video compilation of the mundu-based scenes in Malayalam films.

The major scenes we have compiled are mostly from films such as Ramji Rao Speaking, Thilakkam and Big B among others. Watch the video here:
